A scratchpad for Mac, Windows, Linux and the web

One endless sheet, and a tear for what matters.

Write without deciding where anything goes. Later, tear the useful bits out into folders and tags, or send them straight to Obsidian, Notion or the clipboard.

Tearnote will be $5, once. One email at launch, nothing else.

A strip of notes is torn off the sheet and filed to a folder called Talks with the tag meetup; a one-line stub stays where it was.
How it works

Write first. Decide later.

There is no new-note button. The sheet is always open and always saved; tearing is how something becomes worth keeping.

  1. 1

    Summon the sheet

Press Alt Space from any app and start typing. Press it again to hide. Nothing asks where a thought goes before it exists.

  2. 2

    Tear out what matters

Select a few lines and press ⌘T or Ctrl T, or type --- to make a perforation and tear the whole strip. A stub stays where it was, and undo puts it back.

  3. 3

    File it in a keystroke

Type a folder, add #tags, press Enter. Esc puts the text back on the sheet. Your scraps wait on the desk, by folder and tag.

  4. 4

Send it on, if you like

Write scraps into an Obsidian vault or a Markdown folder, add them to Notion, or copy them as Markdown, plain or rich text. Sending copies; the scrap stays.

Why it feels different

The craft of a paper pad, the reach of a tool.

Every desktop, one license

Mac, Windows, Linux and the web, from one codebase. Your license covers all of them.

Your words stay yours

Local-first and offline, with no account. Everything is Markdown, and a full export is one click away.

Paper that feels like paper

Lined newsprint by day, carbon by night, and a torn edge that is different every time. The paper sound has an off switch.

A keyboard path for everything

Summon, tear, file and search without the mouse. Every shortcut is listed behind ? and can be changed.

Sums on the sheet

End a line with =, like 6 treats * 8 dogs =, and the answer appears. Tab writes it in.

Markdown, live

Headings, lists, checkboxes, bold and links render as you type, with their marks kept faintly in view.

Questions

Before you ask

When can I get it?

Tearnote is with testers now. Join the waitlist and you will get one email when it is ready to buy.

Where are my notes kept?

On your computer. Tearnote works fully offline, with no account. Nothing you write is sent anywhere unless you sync it through your own cloud folder or send a scrap to another app yourself.

Is it a subscription?

No. Tearnote is $5 once, for every platform, with all 1.x updates. Syncing through your own cloud folder is included.

How do I sync between computers?

Point Tearnote at a folder in iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Syncthing on each computer. Each computer writes only its own files there and merges the others, so edits made offline come together without conflict copies. No account, and no server of ours in between. A hosted sync service will come later with the phone apps.

How many computers can I use?

Up to 5 at once with one license, and the web app on top. Replacing a computer? Free its slot from the app or from your purchase email.

What happens to text I tear out?

It becomes a scrap with a title, a folder and tags, and a one-line stub stays on the sheet pointing to it. Every tear can be undone. Sending a scrap to Obsidian, Notion or the clipboard copies it; the scrap stays.

Does it work with Obsidian?

Yes. Point it at your vault and each scrap becomes a Markdown file, or gets appended to one note such as today’s daily note, with its tags in the front matter.

Which computers does it run on?

Macs with Apple silicon, Windows 10 and 11, and 64-bit Linux, plus the web. On Linux with Wayland you bind the show-and-hide shortcut in your desktop settings.

Keep the sheet. Tear the rest.
